Grief can be painful in any form, but some losses are particularly complex, traumatic or difficult to process. When a death or loss feels sudden, shocking, unresolved or deeply life-altering, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, numb, anxious, guilty or unable to make sense of what has happened.
I offer compassionate and confidential therapy for complex and traumatic bereavement in Killingworth and Whitley Bay, supporting clients across Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and the wider North East, as well as online throughout the UK.
When grief feels traumatic
Traumatic bereavement can happen when the circumstances around a loss are distressing, sudden or difficult to comprehend. You may feel haunted by what happened, stuck in the details, unable to talk about it, or as though part of you is still living in the moment of loss.
Complex grief can also arise when the relationship was complicated, the loss was not recognised by others, or there are feelings of guilt, anger, regret, shock or unfinished business.
There is no right way to grieve. Your response is personal, valid and deserving of support.
Support for different forms of loss
I provide sensitive, trauma-informed support for adults affected by:
- Sudden or unexpected bereavement
- Complex or complicated grief
- Traumatic loss
- Baby loss, miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal loss
- Termination for medical reasons or abortion
- Traumatic experiences surrounding pregnancy or birth
- Loss following illness, accident or life-threatening events
- Grief connected to difficult or unresolved relationships
Whether your loss is recent or happened many years ago, therapy can offer a safe space to process what you have been carrying.
How bereavement therapy can help
Grief and trauma can feel overwhelming and isolating. Therapy offers a supportive space where you can explore your emotions without pressure, expectation or judgement.
Together, we can work through the impact of the loss, including feelings of guilt, anger, sadness, anxiety, shame or numbness. Counselling can also support you during anniversaries, life transitions, subsequent pregnancies, relationship difficulties and the ongoing process of adjusting to life after loss.
The aim is not to forget, move on quickly or minimise what has happened. It is to help you find a way to carry your experience with more support, understanding and compassion for yourself.
